The ADC does publish pass rates, in its Annual Reports. The most recent published figures are FY2024: the written examination passed 41% (1,209 of 2,925 candidates) and the practical examination passed 15% (253 of 1,703). The written rate moves a lot between years — it was 24% in both FY2022 and FY2023 before rising to 41% — so treat any single year as a snapshot rather than your odds. Approximate historical figures: Initial Assessment around AUD $647, Written Examination around $2,122 (280 scenario-based MCQs over 2 days), Practical Examination around $4,775 (2-day clinical assessment in Melbourne). Total ADC costs typically around $7,500-8,000 AUD excluding preparation courses and travel. ADC fees are reviewed periodically — verify current figures directly with the Australian Dental Council at adc.org.au before relying on these numbers for budgeting.
You cannot work as a dentist in Australia until you pass the ADC exams and obtain AHPRA registration. However, you may work in related roles such as dental assistant, oral health educator, or in non-clinical dental positions while preparing for your exams.
You need to demonstrate English proficiency through IELTS (minimum 7.0 in each component, 6.5 in writing), PTE Academic (minimum 66 in each, 56 in writing), or OET (minimum B in each, C+ in writing). Graduates from recognised English-speaking countries may be exempt from English testing.
The complete process typically takes 12-24 months from initial application to final registration. This includes: Initial Assessment (8 weeks), Written Exam preparation (6-12 months), Written Exam (held twice yearly - March & September), Practical Exam preparation (2-4 months), and Practical Exam (held in Melbourne).
